ফ্রানসিস জেনকিন্স - জেনকিন্স স্কুল

1793 খ্রীষ্টাব্দে ইংল্যান্ডের কর্ণওয়েলে ফ্রানসিস জেনকিন্স এর জন্ম হয়। তার পিতার নাম ছিল রেভারেন্ড জেনকিন্স। তিনি ছিলেন একজন ধর্মযাজক। ইংল্যান্ডে সৈনিক শিক্ষা সমাপ্ত করে 1810 সিলের 8ই অক্টোবর ভারতে আসেন। 1811 খ্রীষ্টাব্দে ভারতীয় সেনাবিভাগে এনসাইন হিসাবে যোগ দেন। 1816 খ্রীষ্টাব্দে তিনি লেফটেন্যান্ট পদে উন্নীত হন। এরপর 1830 খ্রীষ্টাব্দে ক্যাপ্টেন, 1849 খ্রীষ্টাব্দে মেজর ও 1851 খ্রীষ্টাব্দে লেফটেন্যান্ট কর্ণেল পদে উন্নীত হন। ফ্রানসিস জেনকিন্স ছিলেন উত্তর পূর্ব ভারতের গভর্ণর জেনারেলের এজেন্ট ও কমিশনার অফ সার্ভে। 1834 খ্রীষ্টাব্দে তিনি মিঃ. সি. রবার্টসনের কাছ থেকে উত্তর পূর্ব সীমান্তের কার্য পরিচালনার দায়িত্বভার গ্রহণ করেন। গুয়াহাটি ও গোয়ালপাড়ায় তাঁর সদর কার্যালয় ছিল। বিশেষ কোনো প্রয়োজন ছাড়া তিনি কোচবিহার রাজ্য পরিদর্শনে আসতেন না। 1836, 1841, 1845, 1849, এবং 1860 খ্রীষ্টাব্দে বিশেষ কাজের জন্য কোচবিহার পরিদর্শনে আসেন। 1861 খ্রীষ্টাব্দের 31শে ডিসেম্বর তাঁকে অনারারি মেজর জেনারেল উপাধিতে ভূষিত করা হয়। 1866 খ্রীষ্টাব্দের 28শে আগষ্ট তিনি ভারতেই শেষ নিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করেন। ওনার নামেই কোচবিহারের জেনকিন্স স্কুল প্রতিষ্ঠা হয় 1861 খ্রীষ্টাব্দে এবং এই স্কুলের ফাউন্ডার ছিলেন কোচবিহার রাজ্যের মহারাজা নরেন্দ্রনারায়ণ।

1861 খ্রীষ্টাব্দ পর্যন্ত একটানা চাকরী করার পর তাঁর জায়গায় আসেন এইচ হপকিনসন। তাঁর যোগদানের পর কোচবিহারের মহারাজা নরেন্দ্রনারায়ণ একটি অভিনন্দনপত্র পাঠান এবং মেজর জেনকিন্স সাহেবের সঙ্গে তার সুসম্পর্কের বিষয়টি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভাবে তুলে ধরেন। পত্রটি হল-

My friend, 

I am happy to hear from my Mooktear that you have got safe to Gowhatty on the 25th ultimo. I heartily congratulate you on your appointment to the office of Agent, Governor General and Commissioner of Assam, and hope no sooner it is convenient to, than you will be so good as to visit Coochbehar, and let me have the pleasure of your personal acquaintance. 

 

As regards any particulars about myself and my Raj, i beg to refer your predecessor and my esteemed friend Col. F. Jenkins, who, i believe, is still at Gowhatty.

My friend, 

I have the pleasure to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 5th current, congratulating me on my appointment to the office of the Agent, Governor General North East Frontier, and Commissioner of Assam, and to convey in reply my thanks for the same. 

2nd, i took forward with great satisfaction to the prospect of visiting your Raj, and cultivating personal acquaintance with you. Trusting this will find you in good health.
