Gauhati, Dec. 13

Sjt. Ambikagiri Raychaudhury, General Secretary, Asom Jatya Mahasabha, has sent following telegram to Pandit Neheru, Prime Minister of India and Sardar Patel, Deputy Prime Minister and incharge of the state’s Ministry, regarding the report of proposed merger of Cooch Behar with West Bengal.

The telegram reads:

“THE PRESS REPORT ALLEGING THE STATE’S MINISTRY’S DECISION TO MERGE COOCH BEHAR WITH WEST BENGAL FORTHRIGHT IN CLEAR CONTRADICTION OF PANDIT NEHERU’S PUBLIC STATEMENT AT CALCUTTA AND ASSURANCE TO ASSAM PREMIER, MR. BARDOLOI, THAT COOCH BEHAR’S FUTURE WILL BE FINALLY DECIDED IN ACCORDING WITH THE WISHES OF HER PEOPLE, IS SURPRISING.

“HOPE THAT THE REPORT IS BASELESS AND THE GOVERNMENT WILL NOT BE MISLED BY CLEVER MANIPULATION AND MISREPRESENTATIONS AND DECIDE COOCHBEHAR’S FUTURE ONLY AFTER ASCERTAINING THE WISHES OF HER PEOPLE WHO ARE OVERWHELMENGLY IN FAVOUR OF MERGER WITH ASSAM, LETTER FOLLOWS”
